Leigh S. Hamby, M.D.

Vice President and Chief Quality Officer
of Piedmont Healthcare

Leigh S. Hamby, M.D., MHA, former vice president of Systems Improvement at Piedmont Healthcare. Dr. Hamby has also served as physician advisor for clinical effectiveness at Piedmont Hospital. Prior to joining Piedmont in 2001, Dr. Hamby was director of healthcare quality and evaluation for VA Atlanta Network. Currently an associate professor (adjunct) at the School of Public Health, he was a clinical instructor of surgery at Emory University and has held numerous faculty and clinical appointments in Vermont, New Hampshire and Alabama.

An Atlanta native, Dr. Hamby earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from Emory College, a doctor of medicine from Emory Medical School and a master’s in health administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, as well as a fellowship in healthcare improvement at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire.

A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Hamby served three years as medical director of the trauma program and four years as cancer liaison physician at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala. He also spent a year as chief administrative resident at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
